‘B’ v WAKEFIELD ‘D’
22.11.2009
A rather mundane, perhaps cautious, opening session. Four boards won, four lost, with the margins slightly better for the hosts to provide them with a 6 imp lead.
We fell further behind in round 2. Whilst we had two substantial gains - four plus scores on board 11 and a freakish 1NT doubled plus three from Paddy & Val, we lost all but one of the other hands, three of them badly due respectively to an 800 penalty, four minus scores, and a missed game. Wakefield added a further 17 imps to take their total lead to 23.
The third round was much better, and at last we were firing on all four cylinders winning five of the eight boards with one-shared. The sum total was 23 imps, and the match was all level.
What followed was a series of calamities at Michael & Pauline’s table, chief of which was the slam bid against them on board 26, somewhat at variance with the 2H contract that their team-mates at Table 2 settled on. Whilst Paddy & Val were having the round of their lives, doing enough to win most games, their efforts were largely negated by the misfortunes that were befalling Michael & Pauline. There was a flat board, we had three small gains, two small losses, prior to boards 30 and 31. On the former we had four minus scores, and on the latter conceded a game which went off three times. The combined total of those two was, in effect, the margin of a deficit of 28 imps. Match lost 7 - 13.
Paddy & Val were the pick of our pairs, followed by Chris & Pauline. For the hosts, pair 1 took the honours for their startling/fortuitous last round, prior to which they were trailing their team-mates.
Better luck next time.
