‘B’ v SELBY & HAMBLETON
10.01.2010
We were 2 imps up in the first session, lost 52 in the second and a further 6 in the third, and clawed 15 back in the last round. On the face of it, a relatively close game apart from the disastrous second session, but closer examination reveals a slightly different scenario.
In the first round there was a flat board, we won two, but lost the remaining five. We were only in front because of a freak result on board 2 when Ray & Christine found the only making game whilst Paddy & Val were extracting a 1100 penalty from their opponents.
In the second round the deficit was almost wholly attributable to the fact that our two ‘stronger’ pairs, as mentioned above, were completely outplayed and registered only one plus score apiece. Neither of them can have relished the experience and it is to their eternal credit that they both fought back sufficiently to finish well ahead of Chris & Pauline and Paul & Ingrid overall.
It might be more realistic to look at the Selby scores, from which it is apparent that their pairs 2 and 3 were both outstanding on the day and finished well clear of their own colleagues as well as our pairs.
We are grateful to Selby & Hambleton for volunteering to stage the match and for their generous and delightful hospitality, which we would hope to reciprocate in the future but with a better outcome.
