The first round saw cards biased very much in favour of the north-south pairs, but generally we outplayed the opposition at all four tables. Our N/S players largely bid the games that were available, but theirs missed a few, the one notable exception being the slam bid only once on board 4 (twelve tricks made everywhere). Paul & Ingrid were the blameless sufferers and it was that particular score which separated them from Val and Ann.
Things took a turn for the worse in the second session. We got 1 imp for an extra trick on board 9, and a further 12 when Val & Ann’s opponents went off in a game on board 12. There were two flat boards, but we lost the other four due to three minus scores (three times) and an injudicious double of a 5D contract bid and made at all four tables. Net result 10 imps lost, and the lead margin down to 13.
The cards then went the way of N/S again. Ray & Paddy took most advantage, with Val & Ann scoring best “against the head”. With minimal help from our other pairs they managed five winning boards to two, which added 14 imps to take our lead to 27.
There was some high-scoring in the last round with games available on seven of the eight hands. One of our pairs missed a game, the opposition reciprocated once, and then a fine slam from Ray & Paddy recovered from one bid unsuccessfully by Chris and meant that we were only 6 imps down on the round. Margin reduced to 21 for a winning score of 13 - 7.
The score wasn’t enough to gain promotion but it was a satisfactory win nevertheless. The scoring table reveals that our better pairs on the day were Ray & Paddy and Val & Ann, and it was particularly pleasing for Ann making her one and only seasonal appearance. She also brought a further smile to your reporter’s face as her card suggests she played all eight hands in the second round against pair 9.
