‘B’ v HULL ‘C’

A flying start set the tone for much of the afternoon. We had a double slam swing on hand 3, an opposing pair missed game on two others, accounting for 41 of the 43 imp lead we rattled up, with all four of our pairs recording plus scores.
The second round was rather more docile, with apparently fewer opportunities, but we still added a further 18 imps for a halfway lead of 61.
More fireworks quickly appeared. John & Gillian took an 800 penalty from opponents on board 17, whilst Paddy & Val racked up 2300 when an errant player took only 2 tricks trying a sacrificial 5D doubled, a strong candidate for hand of the season. The same pair took a further 800 on board 23, but we actually lost 3 imps on that hand. We were good enough to add a further 32 mps on the round (again with plus scores from all four pairs), for an overall lead of 93.
Perhaps we tired in the last round, or complacency set in, or we resorted to ultra-safe tactics, or perhaps the hapless hosts staged a minor fight-back, as they managed to erode the deficit by 11 imps, to a total of 82, giving us a sweet victory of 18 - 2.
A look at some of the bare facts is rather misleading. We won 16 boards, lost 12, (including the last 5 of the afternoon), whilst 4 were flat. I have known close matches on those sort of figures, but this one was anything but close We won by a total of 6240 aggregate points and all four of our pairs had cumulative plus scores.
John & Gillian started quietly but then gained momentum to finish virtually dead level with Val & Paddy (who had 2000 in hand from the two boards in round 3 mentioned above). Chris & Pauline had plus scores in all four rounds but were still shaded marginally by Rudi & Ingrid.
I am unable to give details of the individual scores of the opposing pairs, as they appeared to move in a mysterious way, possibly designed to preserve anonymity.
