‘B’  v  HALIFAX ‘B’

06.12.2009

A shaky start.   Paddy & Val, and Chris & Pauline, both scored well enough but were getting little help from our other pairs and it was perhaps a relief that we trailed by only 15 imps.

Fortunately everyone knuckled down in the second round, and all four pairs recorded plus aggregate scores.   We lost only one hand, there were three flat, two small gains and two better ones, four plus scores on board 10, and a double game swing on board 16, for a 29 imp profit to put us in front by 14.   Very good going in the light of the apparently lack-lustre cards.

With some rather more exciting cards in the third round - games available, if not always bid or made, on six of the eight boards, our lead extended a further 19 imps to a total of 33.   We did have four minus scores once, and a further three on board 23, but had three plus scores on three occasions to compensate.   Board 23 was the most eventful - 5S doubled making by Ray, 5D doubled making against Paddy & Val, John & Gillian’s opponents making 3D + 2, and Chris/Pauline going off in 4S - a rare blip from them on the day which they made up for to produce three of our gains.

There was a board voided in the last round but we did enough on the other seven to eke out a further 4 imps for a total margin of 37 and a comfortable 14 - 6 victory.

Chris & Pauline were our best scorers.   Ray & Christine fell heavily behind them on the first round and although they held their own thereafter they could make no inroads on the deficit.   John & Gillian, possibly nervous on their debut as a pair, also fell substantially below Paddy & Val initially but to their eternal credit had made up the leeway by the close.

Looking at the match from Halifax’s perspective their pair 4, believed to be Janet Bull and Edward Kerrod, proved very difficult opposition and were head and shoulders above their team -mates.   The acting captain Liz Bailey and her partner Julian were next best by virtue of their first round score, whilst their two remaining pairs had a day they may prefer to forget.

A satisfactory win, rendered sweeter by its local derby nature.
