‘B’ v GARFORTH

Fast and furious opening exchanges included the only making slam bid of the day with another twenty-two games bid, if not always making. We had the better of the exchanges with 17 plus scores to 15, winning five boards and losing two, to establish a lead of 19 imps.
The second and third rounds were very tight indeed. We had more minus scores than Garforth, won seven boards and lost eight (one shared), but lost only 1 imp, to take a lead of 18 into the last round.
There were two telling features. Firstly, the slam tries. Michael & Pauline were on the receiving end of the making slam in the first round, but on three subsequent occasions successfully defended other bid slams. Both Chris & Pauline and Paul & Ingrid, had a separate unsuccessful attempt apiece. We thus came out of those marginally ahead.
Secondly, sacrificial bids. We gained 9 imps on board 4 when Chris (Pauline) was left to play in 3C undoubled from the West seat when N/S bid and made 4S (with overtricks) elsewhere. A double (3 off vulnerable) would have seen a loss of 3 imps rather than a gain of 9. Subsequently Paul conceded 800 on board 14, which cost only 1 imp as we had three plus scores otherwise, Rudi & Shirley took a 1400 penalty on board 21, and most crucially Chris & Pauline picked up 1100 on board 32. Without either of those our winning margin would have been 12 - 8. As it was, we ended up victorious to the tune of 14 - 6. We were perhaps not in danger of losing but did record fewer plus scores than minus ones, and the game was probably closer than the final score line suggests.
A very good effort overall and a particularly good day for Paulines. Chris & Pauline had an outstanding total (a plus score in every round) whilst Michael & Pauline had a resoundingly good debut.
