‘A’ v WETHERBY ‘A’
01.11.2009
It is possible that teams have suffered poorer starts than we made, but hard to imagine. Certainly not what was required to settle the nerves of our ‘stand-in’ pairs. John & Joan failed to bid makeable games on three occasions, unlike the Wetherby pair at table 4 (Mr & Mrs Shaw?). On board 4 both our N/S pairs bid a slam which proved a trick too far for them, a whacking 20 imps, and Ray did the same on board 6. We got a few back when an opposition pair reciprocated on board 3, but generally leaked points to a total deficit of 52 imps.
The second round produced a ray of hope as, whilst there were three flat boards, the misplaced slam tries went 2 - 1 in our favour and we clawed back 22 imps.
The third round was a much quieter affair, but a little disappointing from our point of view as we slipped back a further 16 imps. Board 17 provided the anomaly of the day - at least twelve tricks were available in spades but no-one stretched to the slam, indeed one of our pairs played in 1S.
The last round produced some satisfaction. We won six of the boards for an overall margin of 17 imps, reducing the losing total to 29. Even one more Imp would have been better, but not to be, and we lost the match 14 - 6.
All credit to Wetherby, who outplayed us generally, We were never firing on enough cylinders with any regularity, and paid the price. Tony & Lynda were the pick of our pairs, whilst Mr & Mrs Gowland, along with Smart & Benn, led for the visitors.
