‘A’ v KEIGHLEY ‘B’

There was a lively opening, with scoring opportunities for everyone. The boards were shared and despite suffering our two biggest losses of the day we ended up with a lead of 11 imps, four of which dwindled away in a fairly humdrum second round.
There was a bit more excitement after the interval with slams bid on two boards, number 19 where 7D was cold but never bid, one opposing pair making 6D + 1, the other going one off in 7C, with one of our pairs making 6C; and number 22 where three pairs went off in 6C or 6NT whilst Raymond & Shirley alone stayed in 4S. We added 12 imps on the round to take our overall lead to 19.
The last round was a complete disaster for the visitors. All four of their pairs recorded minus scores and a further 45 imps went our way, making a total of 64 and a handsome 17 - 3 victory.
Throughout the match Tony/Lynda and Brian/Mick had virtually kept pace with one another, whilst John/Joan’s minus total was not a long way adrift of them. It did however fall some 4400 aggregate points short of that achieved by Raymond/Shirley who outplayed all four opponents in a dazzling display. As always, everyone chipped in with a telling score here and there but the day really belonged to the brilliant Blamires.
For the visitors the two ladies seated at table 1 survived better than their colleagues.
