‘A’ v RIPON

The opening session was noteworthy in that the N/S pairs only managed three plus scores between them, such was the marked bias in the cards. Fortunately we slightly outscored the opposition, despite sharing the boards, for a lead of 14 imps.
The second round saw a complete reversal of the cards but we were able to outplay our hosts thanks largely to two slams bid by them, one against Tony & Lynda which could not make, and one against John & Joan which should have made but was misplayed. We rattled up a further 28 imps for a comfortable lead of 42.
The cards were somewhat more even thereafter, but in the third round all four of our pairs returned minus scores. We scored an imp, there were two flat boards, and the other five were lost to a total of 38 imps - margin 37, overall lead down to a scanty 5 imps. It must be said that the culprit was John (partner blameless) who made a number of poor judgments, most embarrassing of which was miscounting his high card points, Given that two of our team on the day were known to have health and fitness problems we paid the penalty for the apparently blind leading the halt.
In the last session we lost four boards and won only two - 6 imps when Raymond & Shirley extracted an 800 penalty on hand 26 to overcome our three minus scores, and a further 13 on board 27 due to an inspired defence from John & Joan - seeking atonement. All was not lost, we ended up with just 1 imp to spare for a ‘winning’ draw.
The makeshift partnership of Brian & Ray held their own before fading slightly in the last session. The scores reveal that our best pairs overall were Raymond & Shirley and Tony & Lynda. For the opposition, pair 3 were easily the most successful.
