‘A’ v DONCASTER ‘C’

A quiet start, as is often the case, saw us pick up 14 imps on board 5 with 3NT made by our E/W pairs but not by opponents. The other boards were shared.
Round 2 was livelier but yielded a further 5 imps, and at this point there were no signs of the deluge to follow, but 41 imps in round three rather took us out of sight, and an additional 25 in the last round was icing on the cake.
As the match progressed there were game and slam opportunities for everyone, not always wisely taken, but quite a number of our gains came on part scores in which collectively we outbid and outplayed our opponents. Our two biggest scores came on board 17, where our E/W pairs went off quietly but our N/S pairs both took 800 penalties, and board 25 where John & Joan bid and made a streaky 6H with two pairs in the safe game, whilst Raymond & Shirley took the first five diamond tricks against a hopeless 3NT from the wrong seat.
As the match progressed Raymond & Shirley wove their customary spells, but for much of the time Tony & Lynda kept pace. They only made two significant errors - pushing opponents to 6C on board 11 whilst Raymond & Shirley played in 3H doubled minus one, and on board 15 when the lead presented opponents with an otherwise unmakeable grand slam. Very costly for Tony & Lynda but not for the team. Our E/W pairs played in 5C + 1 (board 11) and 6S on board 15 (Raymond & Shirley’s opponents sticking at 4S). Tony recovered a bit of the ground with an astonishing make in 4S on board 28, no other declarer taking more than seven tricks.
John & Joan were pleased to slightly outscore Mick & Brian, at last, but perhaps largely due to the aforementioned dodgy 6H.
Warm congratulations to everyone - the 18 - 2 victory was due reward for the best overall performance for some time.
