‘A’ v BEAUCHIEF ‘A’
22.11.2009
The host team were of similar age to us but were either less experienced, nervous or deploying poor tactics and possibly all three. They certainly shot themselves in the foot early on with some optimistic bidding, particularly at John & Joan’s table, and trailed by 30 imps in the first round.
The second round was almost a replica, but with generally lower scores, and we added a further 17 imps for a half-time lead of 47.
The third round saw some extravagant scoring with some very competitive bidding, games and slams freely available and/or bid. We shared the boards this time and despite a disastrous - 2300 aggregate on one hand (20 imps) we managed to increase our lead by a further 6 imps.
All credit to Beauchief, they got marginally better with each successive round, and outscored us by 11 imps in the last session. We in turn either tired or relaxed towards the end of the game, but were never really threatened.
Tony & Ray matched Raymond & Shirley up to the interval, and really only fell behind due to a swing on board 20 where one home pair picked the wrong slam. Mick & Brian were able to ease in front of John & Joan in the latter stages but overall we had the four best pairs on the day, and fully deserved our 42 imps for a winning total of 15 - 5.
